The Killingly Intermediate School 7th Grade Chorus endeared themselves to Westview patients and residents with a heartfelt “Music and Mingle” gathering. This social song session arose by the KIS 7th Grade Chorus and KIS Music Teacher Allegra Plantier applying to be a part of a grant initiative for music programs in Connecticut schools. Their acceptance to the program provides funding to buy the song rights for public presentation, transportation to other performance venues, and helps to cover associated choral costs. One key qualifying factor is that the plan must include the student vocalists going to places like skilled nursing facilities—and not only go to sing, but to take some time exchanging in pleasant conversations with their audience. We are so honored, elated, and impressed by their visit to Westview Health Care Center!
Throughout their concert, the KIS 7th Grade Choir projected crisp lyrics in proper meter, demonstrated an impressive understanding of multi-part harmonies, and showcased opportunities for soloists mixed with the melodic backing vocals of the collective. One such example was their rousing rendition of Michael Bublé’s “Feeling Good.” Chorus leader Allegra Plantier beamed with gleeful energy as she conducted the singers. She spoke to her students’ remarkable confidence, as they were the ones who selected such ambitious but attainable pieces to perform. Most of all, she proudly commented that the best part of this experience is the mutually shared enjoyment between the chorus and the audience: “I think this is such a beneficial event for both the patients and residents at Westview as well as our students. They get to share their love of music with those who have likely grown up with music as an essential part of their life.”
As planned, the students shared some fellowship with Westview patients and residents following the concert. Their conversations ranged from cordial reviews about the concert of note to lively repartees on local trivia. We are so thankful and so impressed in experiencing the extraordinary talents and charming company of the Killingly Intermediate School 7th Grade Chorus. Bravo, Bravo!!!
