Summer Spirit Week!

Date
June 30, 2022

"Summer Spirit Week" was a smash here at Westview!

For Monday’s theme of "Floppy Sun Hat Day", staff members, residents, patients, and a few of our furry friends got in on the fun. We even brought summer inside with a game of balloon volleyball. Our athletes were so excited to play that they went through three balloons in the process!

On Tuesday, we enjoyed some fun on "Swimsuit Day," with staff members (and as always, a four-legged friend) striking their best poses. We made sure to have lifeguards on duty—in our Aquatic Therapy department, that is!

Wednesday served as "Resident Luau Day" with a robust series of events throughout the day. The Therapeutic Recreation Department distributed grass skirts and leis to our employees, patients, and residents so that everyone could get in a tropical mood. Around midday, the residents enjoyed some summertime grill staples as their lunch. Our formal dining room was then transformed into our own beach-front Luau, with colorful aquatic posters, inflatable palm trees, pineapples, umbrellas, and even a surfboard as some of the decorations to really set the scene. There was plenty of hula dancing, plenty of sustained laughter, and plenty of loving energy at the party!

Guitarist and vocalist Jim Harkins brought his signature sound of easy melodies and lively classics to entertain the patients and residents at the resident party. During the Luau, tropical punch was served to our partygoers, and many joined in singing along when they recognized the tune. Ever the traveling troubadour, Jim Harkins finished his afternoon by bringing his gift of song to individual resident rooms and making sure that everyone who wanted to hear some live music was able.

Summer Spirit Week wrapped up with even more sunny days outside and inside. On Thursday, we hosted “Pool Party Day” and our employees were invited to wear their favorite floaties, snorkels, towels, and any other aquatic accessories needed for poolside fun. Many of our employees also wore purple attire in solidarity with Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Michelle Daniels, a very valued, long standing, and dedicated Certified Nursing Assistant at Westview, made a generous monetary contribution towards the celebration. Her gift helped supplement a Mister Softee ice cream truck visiting the facility to praise our most valuable resource: our dedicated employees. Later on Thursday afternoon, our residents continued their enjoyment of the week-long summer celebration by watching the classic Elvis Presley movie, “Blue Hawaii.”

Continuing this theme, Westview employees delighted in Friday’s “Hawaiian Shirt Day.” The brightly colored and patterned shirts and dresses, in addition to the warm temperatures, helped us all to feel like we were transported to a sandy beach on the Pacific Ocean. Our canine friend Flint couldn’t even resist the urge to wear his favorite Hawaiian shirt—and our tropical fish enjoyed how Westview looked like home for a few days! Summer Spirit Week at Westview was a tremendously entertaining tidewater; rising to lift up the souls of our patients, residents, and employees.
