Ranging from cute and adorable to ghastly and horrible, Westview residents, patients, staff and visitors donned an assortment of costumes for their annual Halloween extravaganza. Administrator David T. Panteleakos hails the event as "One of the most colorful, fun and welcoming events of the entire year."
The facility brimmed with cackling creatures and mischievous minions throughout the day as gypsies, ghosts and things with wings lurked the halls. Westview's recreation department kicked the party off in their Formal Dining Room with a spirited performance by Ellen of "We've Got Rhythm!". Following the entertainment, residents and patients returned to the doorways of their rooms, transforming the hallways into a neighborhood of decorated residences for trick-or-treaters. In anticipation of the many children, families, and visitors who make Halloween at Westview an annual pilgrimage, each station was stocked with sweet elements: a resident, an accompanying staff member, and loads of candy.
Everyone wore smiles, the young ones wore smiles and pumpkin buckets. Superhero costumes were popular as ever. Winged fairies had a resurgent presence. All around were various film and television characters, most of whom you would recognize. The original, do-it-yourself costuming was especially impressive, featuring one young girl from Moosup named Ellamae dressed as Clara Barton, the Nurse who founded the American Red Cross. It was hauntingly adorable.
Scores of children trekked through the halls stopping at resident and patients' rooms where they traded smiles for sugar. Yet the most wonderful aspect of this event is not the candy that they receive, but the happiness that these little spirits bring to the residents. Westview resident Matthias was joined by his daughter Bessie, and she commented on how uplifting it was for her to see her father enjoying the activity. "I haven't seen him smile this much in years!" She exclaimed. "It's just like the old neighborhood, but even safer, brighter and warmer. I'm so happy to see this; I'm really enjoying myself."
