A day in the life for residents and patients of Westview Health Care Center includes walks to the park and stops at the local boutique, library, theatre, pottery shop, diner, general store, and chapel. What makes the trip especially unique is that the residents and patients never once leave their residence at Westview Health Care Center in Dayville.
That's because construction workers at the 103-bed health care facility recently put the finishing touches on Main Street USA, a creatively renovated section of the building designed to resemble quaint shops along a scenic downtown northeastern Connecticut setting.
An open house for residents, patients and family members was held on Wednesday, September 24th from 1:30-3:30. Each stop along Main Street USA brought delight as residents and patients encountered themed rooms such as a 1950's diner with an ice cream parlor and general store, a surround sound theater, The Pottery Shop arts and crafts room, City Place family gathering room, The Bugbee Memorial Library, a non-denominational interfaith chapel, The Pretty In Pink Boutique, and Westview's indoor Central Park.
"We are very excited to unveil Main Street USA to our residents and patients," remarked David T. Panteleakos, Administrator/CEO of Westview. "This project will further enhance social programs and activities through structured recreational programming."
Spectators strolled Main Street USA in awe of the whimsical artwork that depicts the natural beauty, simplicity and small town local flair of northeastern Connecticut. The tour also included an old-fashioned strawberry shortcake/ice cream sundae social and music from the 20s, 30s and 40s by entertainer Jim Dehls.
Brey, who also serves as President of the Westview Resident Council was thoroughly impressed with the renovations. "I am very pleased with the opportunity Main Street will present for the residents and patients of Westview," she commented. "This exciting concept will provide many fulfilling hours of socialization in this wonderfully decorated and dedicated area of the facility."
The opening completes a comprehensive expansion/renovation project to the facility that began in 2005 and paves the way to an original and unconventional approach in health care.
