Westview Health Care Center residents, patients and employees celebrated the arrival of summer with a "Fun In The Sun" party that consisted of food, fun, prizes and featured a beautiful summertime themed sand sculpture, hand carved by the creative artists of Sandtasia.
Westview has sponsored the eye-popping sand sculpture for the annual Woodstock Fair since 2006. Westview Director of Therapeutic Recreation Pam Fillmore suggested a sand sculpture for the Fun In The Sun party and the wheel was set in motion.
"We love the relationship we've literally carved with Westview," said Sandtasia owner Stephen Topazio. "The residents and patients were very interested in the project while we constructed the sand castle. We loved answering questions and watching the expressions as the sculpture came to life."
Sandtasia was born in 2001 when owner Stephen Topazio entered an amateur sand sculpting competition in Newport and claimed 1st place. He connected with master sand sculptors and learned many techniques and was later recognized and invited to compete at master sand sculpture levels of competition. Stephen enters sand sculpting competitions throughout the east coast and presently sculpts at special events, where he is joined by his sister, Jessica DiCostanzo.
Sandtasia's greatest accomplishment has been the 61-ton barnyard theme creation they made for the Woodstock Fair. The 28-foot-tall masterpiece took five artists a week to create. Sandtasia chose to create a barnyard scene for that project to go along with the agricultural theme of the fair.
"I haven't been to the beach in years, said Westview resident Alma Brey. So instead Westview brought a little bit of the beach to me. I was mesmerized by the creation of this beautiful work of art."
